Clinical efficacy of enteral nutrition preparations in the treatment of patients with decompensated hepatitis B-induced liver cirrhosis

Abstract: Objective The aim of this study was to investigate clinical efficacy of enteral nutrition preparations in the treatment of patients with decompensated hepatitis B-induced liver cirrhosis (LC). Methods 80 patients with decompensated hepatitis B-induced LC were encountered in Sanshui District People's Hospital, Foshan City between January 2023 and May 2024, all patients were carefully managed with comprehensive internal medication, and were randomly assigned to receive general whole-protein enteral nutrition preparations in 40 cases in control group, or to receive enteral special nutrition preparations in another 40 cases in observation group for six months. Blood, biochemical and serum liver fibrosis markers were routinely screened. Results By end of six-month treatment, two patients in the control and one patient in the observation died; serum albumin level in the observation survivals was (35.7±5.4)g/L, much higher than [(31.1±4.6)g/L, P<0.05], while total serum bilirubin level was (22.6±8.1)μmol/L, much lower than [(28.9±9.7)μmol/L, P<0.05] in control survivals; red blood cell count and hemoglobin level were (4.1±1.4)×1012/L and (108.5±6.9)g/L, both significantly higher than [(3.8±1.6)×1012/L and (98.2±5.8)g/L, respectively, P<0.05] in the control; serum hyaluronic acid and type IV collagen levels were (123.6±15.0)μg/L and (135.0±47.8)μg/L, both significantly lower than [(151.4±16.0)μg/L and (158.7±46.1)μg/L, respectively, P<0.05] in the control group. Conclusion The additional oral supplement with liver disease-special enteral nutrition preparations in dealing with patients with decompensated hepatitis B-induced LC could ameliorate anemia and hypoproteinemia, which merits further clinical investigation.
