Efficacy of polyene phosphatidylcholine and glycyrrhizin combination in the treatment of patients with chemotherapy-induced liver injury

Abstract: Objective The aim of this study was to investigate evaluate the efficacy ofpolyene phosphatidylcholine and glycyrrhizin combination in the treatment of patients with chemotherapy-induced liver injury. Methods A total of 98 patients with naïve diagnosed breast cancer were encountered in our hospital between January 2022 and December 2024, all received surgical resection of tumors, and standardized anthracycline-based combination chemotherapy post-operationally for four circles. The patients with drug-induced liver injures (DILI) were managed with oral polyene phosphatidylcholine and glycyrrhizin combination for four to eight weeks. Results Of the 98 patients with breast cancer, DILI occurred in 57 cases (58.2%) during antitumor chemotherapy; baseline body mass index, percentages of concomitant hypertension, diabetes, and stage III/IV tumors in patients with DILI were (25.4±2.7)kg/m2, 24.6%, 19.3% and 56.1%, all significantly greater or higher than [(23.5±2.3)kg/m2, 7.3%, 4.9% and 29.3%, respectively, P<0.05] in those without DILI; of the 57 patients with DILI, we found hepatocellular type in 24 cases, cholestatic type in 22 cases and mixed type in 11 cases, with<grade 3 in 45 cases and ≥grade 3 in 12 cases; the recovery time in patients with ≥grade 3 liver injury was (47.5±8.0)d, much longer than [(22.6±4.5)d, P<0.05] in those with <grade 3; all but one, who died of liver failure, got their liver function tests back to normal. Conclusion Oral polyene phosphatidylcholine and glycyrrhizin combination in dealing with DILI in patients with breast cancer during chemotherapy has a satisfactory efficacy, which merits broaden clinical investigation.
